What am I?
This incredible honey is only found in New Zealand where honey bees gather pollen from the Manuka Tea Tree (leptospermum scoparium) exclusive to this country.

What makes ‘Active Manuka Honey’ special, apart from its delicious taste, is that it can be used to benefit health both internally and externally.

The healing properties of the Manuka Tea Tree are somehow imparted into the honey. Giving Manuka Honey a unique antibacterial strength, known as the UMF. This stands for ‘Unique Manuka Factor’.

The UMF is a measurement of the active bacterial potency found in the honey. The UMF number refers to a laboratory test where the honey is compared with a chemical called Phenol. (Phenol in its undiluted form is both extremely caustic and poisonous. Diluted, it is used in antiseptics and disinfectants). For example, a UMF rating of 8 would be equivalent to the antiseptic potency of 8% solution of phenol. A honey with a rating of 10 would have a potency equivalent to a 10% solution of phenol.

Most research has been conducted using 10+ and it is thought a UMF of 8 or over is useful in terms of remedy though anything under this is of little benefit. Our 15+ is excellent for both internal and topical use.

Due to a mite infestation in New Zealand (and most of the world) it has become necessary to control infestation by using chemicals. Dr Ritter in "Varroa Disease of the Honeybee Apis mellifera," states that unsuitable highly toxic substances are coming into use and their improper application can contaminate honey.

A number of Manuka Honey hives producing honey this year, may have had to use pesticides to control the Varoa mite problem. If it is not certified Organic don’t risk it.

‘Creative Nature’s Manuka Honey’ has been sourced from the few remaining clean hives in the remote west coast of the South Island and Canterbury. Its purity is guaranteed by the ‘Soil Association Organic Standard’.

What’s in me?
• Honey harvested from Bees, collecting nectar from the Manuka Tea Tree.
• Natural sugars
• Antibacterial Chemicals: Hydrogen Peroxide, Pinocembrin, Terpenes, Benzyl Alcohol, 3,5-Dimethoxy-4-Hydroxybenzoic Acid (Syringic Acid), Methyl 3,5-Dimethoxy-4-Hydroxybenzoate (Methyl Syringate), 3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzoic Acid, 2-Hydroxy-3-Phenylpropionic Acid, 2-Hydroxybenzoic Acid and 1,4-Dihydroxybenzene. (The presence of these Antibacterial chemicals have been identified by The Waikato Honey Research Unit)
• NOTE: Hydrogen Peroxide alone is responsible for most honeys antibacterial qualities. However this is not stable when subjected to heat or light. Only Manuka Honey has these other antibacterial chemicals making it stable even when subjected to heat and light. In fact the UMF is calculated after Hydrogen Peroxide has been extracted.

What can I be used for?
• Active Manuka Honey has been found (in laboratory conditions) to inhibit the growth of Helicobacter pylori - the bacteria considered the main cause of stomach ulcers.
• Research also suggests that the honey when ingested may also help fight many other bacterial species, including Salmonella and E. Coli.
• Tests conducted at Waikato found that all strains of the hospital superbug Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) were completely inhibited by Manuka Honey. Even the strains resistant to all of the antibiotics in common use were no match for Manuka!
• Internally evidence suggests that it may help fight gastrointestinal infections and be beneficial for sore throats and colds.
• Externally it can be applied for wounds, burns and skin ulcers.
• When applied with a wound dressing, it does not dry out the wound providing a bacteria free, moist healing environment and enabling the dressing to be removed painlessly and without causing damage to re-growing tissue.
• Tests were conducted on infected lesions that were not responding to standard antibiotic and antiseptic therapy. In almost every case, when Active Manuka Honey was applied it was found to rapidly clear up infection.
• Let’s not forget Manuka Honey can also be used as a delicious food!

How should I be taken?
You can enjoy ‘Creative Nature’s Organic Manuka Honey,’ as you would any premium honey… either spread on your toast or add to smoothies. Its exquisite taste of floral yet woody flavours is divine however you decide to take it.

For therapeutic use we suggest spreading about one tablespoon onto a slice of bread approximately one hour before meals (without fluids) and again before bedtime. The bread enables the honey to stay in the stomach for longer, though some people have reported good results straight from the spoon. Research is ongoing to establish a more accurate dose.

If you have a cold or a sore throat why not add a teaspoon of honey to a lemon infusion. ‘Creative Nature’s Romanian Bee Pollen’ can also be added which can be gargled as well as drunk.

For external use: Clean the wound. Then apply the honey to a clean dressing (typically, one heaped teaspoon, 20ml/25g of honey, is used on a 4x4 inch dressing) and cover. If the wound is exuding a lot of fluid change the dressing up to 3 times a day (if the dressing sticks to the wound this indicates more frequent changing is required). Generally changing once a day is sufficient and as the wound heals this can be reduced to once or twice a week.
